Check out some hostels in Bundaberg. Its a bit of a rough town with a bad reputation, but as long as you have at least a little common sense you'll be alright
When I was there I stayed with Workers and Divers, which was real good. Not allowed to drink, but they did get us work every day we wanted it.
I dont recommend Cell Block though Its a great party hostel if you are passing through, but they dont have the connections to get you constant work right now from what I've heard.

I went to Mildura from Sydney to do my 3 months, all i can say is DON'T stay at Mildura International Backpackers, they take you for a ride, they charge $7 a day to take you to and from work. other hostels in the area are Oasis backpackers, i heard that these were really good, a nice comfy hostel to stay in.
I've gone blank, there was another one which i visited and didnt like the look of it but everybody moved there and loved it, the feel for the place was great, its a real party hostel, you would meet so many pople there, i can't fault that, they take you to and from work free of charge, as do most of the hostels there. I'm really sorry i can't think of the name. i'll post a repy if i can remember.
Doing the fruit picking in small town like that for a longer period of time i met life-long friends. Now you've got me reminising, its was one of my best times in Oz, weird as i hated the fruit picking but i guess it's who you meet. really hope you enjoy it, good luck!

I was in shepparton this time of the year, and there was plenty of work. I wouldn't recomend doing this through a backpackers, as they will take all the money you make. You pay for accomodation and transport even if you're not working. I would suggest getting a car and a tent, or finding some other travellers with a car and driving around to the different farms. In shepparton there is a office (I'm sorry I can't remember where, but any of the locals would know) that will find work for you (free of charge) We just showed up everyday and after 3 days they had work for all 6 of us. The good thing about shepparton is it wasn't too far from melbourn and some nice beaches so you could take a break when you needed it. We also camped on the property for 10$ a week,and worked 6 days wich meant we saved 500$ a week. Those that stayed in the backpackers were paying 200$ a week accomodation plus 10$ a day for transport, and only working 4 or 5 days a week.
I would also recomend kununura, albany and Mildura. The grape growing regions were good too, because I found this to be the easiest crop to pick, but you really need to show up at the right time of the year. In south australia we showed up in the town centre at 6am and the farmers would come and pick you up then drop you off again, but by the end of the season sometimes we only worked for one hour, wrong time of the year...

Two weeks ago I decided with my friend Cinzia to go for some fruit picking, usually in Australia it's a good way to save money but we discovered that this is not true!!
We called the harvest trail and they gave us the number of Bundaberg backpackers in Bundaberg telling us that they should have some work for us. So we called immediately the backpackers and I was told to come as they have work and they need girls and that was fantastic we are Italians because there weren't so many Italians..so we catched the bus from Cairns to Bundaberg, 150 AUD and 20 hours trip!!! We arrived there in the middle of the night,at 3:30 am. Everything was closed except MacDonald was opening at 5 am..so we waited sitting on the bench near the couch station, then we moved to Macdonald until 9 am,when the backpackers reception opened..there was no work for us immediately and we had to wake up every night at 2 o'clock in the night for the stand-by to replace people don't showing up for work.. and there were a lot of Italians!!!..now it's almost 2 weeks we are here, I worked only 3 days and I lost 1 day of work because the reception made a mistake and didn't write my name in the work list!!! Obviously I went to the reception to ask for explanations and when I told them that I lost a day of work because of them they answered me something like if I wanted to work I had to shut up!!!! Before that I have called the harvest trail to explain what was happening here as they gave me the number of this place..but nothing has changed and they keep giving the phone number of Bundaberg backpackers!!
I worked in zucchini picking and I will be paied 2,17 AUD per bucket (it contains more than 50 zucchinis), that means hard work for nothing!! Last Friday night 2 Australian 15yo boys have stolen my bag while I was using the wifi outside the library around 11 pm..yesterday (Saturday afternoon) I kindly asked to the reception to give me the passaport I gave them instead of the key deposit of 50 AUD,just for the night to go out (in my bag there were my ID,driver lic... and credit card) and they told me I had to give them 50AUD!!!!!I couldn't withdraw (no credit card and banks were closed) and I didn't want to ask to my friend to borrow me the money,so I argued and I was told to leave the backpackers,I didn't,I had paied until Wednesday and I knew all the backpackers are full..so I answered "if you find a place for me I leave"..they told me to pack my stuff and leave and that the police was coming and I answered that I was waiting for the police..nobody came and I am still in this shit of backpakers!!!
No comment, just I have to wait until the end of the Anzac week end to organize my new trip!
I am only very sad for a so negative experience!

I have heard the same thing about Balfes Hill Backpackers, but have not stayed there personally. When i was fruit picking around Australia i found there was not alot of fruit picking hostels which were decent and the good ones were always fully booked. There are a few sites which list fruit picking hostels on the internet and a google seach can help you there. -snip-
