We are flying into Rome and will stay in Rome for 4 days. We want to take the train to Cinque Terre. We want to fly back to the USA from Cinque Terre....where is the best locaion to fly back to the STATES without having to go back to Rome?
First of all I would like to welcome you on Travellerspoint. You will get your answer if you post this question in the Europe forum. Cheers! Goodluck
The closest major airports to where you are going to be is:
-Milan
-Zurich
-Geneva
Look into Ryanair, they may have very cheap options to these cities. Also remember, returning from a different city may sometimes be more expensive.
Hope this helps.
If you are flying to and from Italy from and to the States chances are high you'll end up flying into and out of Rome. You might be able to fly from Venice or Milan, but Rome is usually the cheapest.
Cinque Terre are 5 small villages near Florence, nearest international airports are Milan and Venice.
I'm concerned that some of the information given on here could be misleading - for instance:
The nearest major airports to the Cinque Terre are Genoa (Genova in Italian) and Pisa. They are on the Ligurian coast near La Spezia, and a long way from Florence!
Milan is probably the nearest intercontinental airport - but it might be cheaper and more convenient for US travellers to go via London - there are good cheap flight connections with many Italian cities.

Good point that you make. Bear in mind also, that the UK budget airlines also fly within Europe (ie from Paris to Rome or Amsterdam to Frankfurt, just as two examples) and it might be possible to get a cheap mainland connection to the USA.
However, you havent said exactly in the USA where you need to get back to.
Some of the cheapest fares from mainland Europe are into Newark, O'Hare, Norfolk (VA) and Baltimore. Its true though, the vast majority of cheap Europe - USA flights are from LHR, LGW and MAN.
