Fiji - what to do!

Hi - i'm travelling to Fiji for 10 days from 25 Feb to 4 March and i was wondering what to do there?

You're heading to a well worn tourist track-follow the herd and Be Happy!

Hey

I was thinking the same thing! I was going to pre-book but now i'm thinking that i might just pre-book my New Zealand pass and then wait and see what happens cause no doubt i'll end up meeting others who are in the same boat - i hope, ha, cause i'm going on my tod ! Just don't want to end up stuck with nowhere. Does anybody think that might happen??

I'll be there the same time as you. Have you booked New Zealand yet, if so, how are you travelling and are you doing it with any tour companies? I can't make up my mind who to go with!

Diving with Bull sharks is a very popular activity, it can be done off the coast of Suva ... amazing experience.

Also with regards to accomodation, i believe you need to book ahead - i travelled the Mamanuca & Yasawa island groups and i allways booked ahead with a resort for the island i was arriving on ... cant say if its 100% essential tho.

I recommend an awesome hike with amazing views on the island of Waya Laili, the islands on the southern end of the Yasawa chain, on a clear day - breathtaking!!

Aside from this, snorkle, live village life for a day or 2 and generally soak up the paradise like surroundings.

Enjoy

Try to get away from other travelers if you can and visit more remote areas. There are still relatively undeveloped pockets of cultural richness in Fiji. Don't forget to give a gift of kava to any village chief you may visit. It is still the accepted custom. Hitch a ride on a yacht if you can. You'll see places that are truly off the beaten path. Take a mail boat to an island that has no tourism. Kandavu might be a starting place. Both the native Melanesians and Indians are very welcoming.

i am going to new zealand jan - marchish i think, and was thinking of going to fiji on the way back, maybe with a 'south pacific pass'
i haven't planned the fiji part at all,and am too hoping there will be other people heading that way,as i will be travelling alone.

i guess i should probably plan something otherwise accomodation might be tricky?!

You should try to go to a local village. When I was there I went on this tour I think it was called Sigatoka river safari and it was booked through the resort I was staying at which was the Shangrila Fijian resort on the Coral Coast. That went up the river in a jetboat past a lot of local villages and then went to an actual village where an enormous lunch was prepared with the villagers and it was a really nice experience.

If you went up to Pacific Harbour you can do heaps of activities like the Zipline. The guy who runs that is some American who was talking about doing one around Nadi area which would be a lot more convenient for the regular tourists who don't go for hours around the island. Pacific Harbour is the adrenalin capital of Fiji so if you want to have some fun that is a great place but it all comes at a cost.

Other than that you should make sure you are at one of the decent properties when they have a fire show on as that is really amazing to watch.

Other than that snorkeling can be great out on some of the island resorts and relaxing on the beach. I thought Beachcomber was very over-rated and way over priced for what you get. If you want party atmosphere all the time it is great but if you don't want to be in bed half the day to party all night long then another island would be a much better option.
