How much time do you have in OZ, that seems awfully short time to make your way down to Adelaide, so much to see in between. I don't know what are your interest....Adelaide is a pretty city, but very quiet and not that much to do and see around it?! Other people can shoot me if they disagree lol...
I would go slowly from Sydney to Melbourne following the Emerald coast, gorgeous little spots along the way, oh just thought do you have transportation? Golden sandy beaches with nobody at sight, that's what Australia is all about beautiful scenery....
I agree, there's not much to see or do in Adelaide. However, we recently visited Deep Creek Conservation Park south of Adelaide and loved it! We stayed at the Ridgetop Retreats, beautiful modern cabins in the woods. There is some spectacular scenery and hiking, and we saw a field full of kangaroos. Then we took the ferry to Kangaroo Island and spent a few days there-- also very worthwhile.
I can't think of a more boring place to be for christmas or new years...maybe invercargill in new zealand.
seriously though adelaide is one of those places that just shuts down at 7pm.
If it were me I'd stay in melbourne for or make it back to sydney for new years. sydney is meant to go off on new years.
actually I would just stay in sydney the whole time and really see the city. you'll meet people and by the time the holidays come you'll have friends to share it with.
I think I spent around 3 weeks in sydney and had a blast.
Adelaide is a nice enough city but it's pretty sleepy and there's not loads to do. I would recommend Sydney or Melbourne as there will be loads going on over Christmas and New Year.
I love Melbourne, and while I haven't spent NYE there before, I'm sure it goes off Adelaide is nice, but as the others have said above, its not as nearly as buzzing as other cities in Aussie
I would recommend Melbourne as there will be much going on over Christmas and New Year. You will really enjoy Melbourne specially in Christmas. I went to Melbourne on last Christmas with my friends, i really enjoyed there and i am also going there at this Christmas too.
Ok, this was ages ago, but I might as well update, eh?
I ended up booking five days for Christmas in Adelaide at My Place Backpackers Hostel on 257 Waymouth Street. In the end, I never ended up going to Melbourne for New Years, but extended my stay at My Place so I was there a couple of weeks. I found it a great hostel, met a great crowd, had an excellent time there. Despite Adelaide being smaller, and not being a big party city, it was still perfect. The hostel has a most amiable balcony (with liquor store nearby, so it was quite nice). There's an internet cafe down the street, some fairly cheap and sexy pizza take out a five minute walk away and other such places, some clubs/pubs in the area (this street is a twenty minute walk or so, less, maybe, to the very centre). Across the street there's a very nice pub that most of the Hostel people visit. And of course you have your museums, parks, the centre, things like that. There's a bus at the hostel and they do trips to the beach and up mountains and things, I think, too. But anyway. Loved it. Relaxing, but was also great fun. Had also many good nights staying out on the balcony, random parties, things like that. I recommend it!!
