i'm from Brooklyn, and my wife and i are driving down to Charleston for a week in mid-March.
we've never been, but we love the beach off-season; and we really enjoy discovering new places, especially the local spots.
problem is, all i can find online is a bunch of cheesy travel-sites with thumbnail pics of hampton inns and golf courses... can anyone out there lead us toward a couple great spots to start with? maybe an off-the-beaten-path place to stay that's not crazy expensive? or a great bar with no sign, tucked away at the end of an alley somewhere? or a seafood restaurant on a crooked dock with a guy playing lounge piano?
i will be happy to return the favor (vis a vis New York City) anytime!
cheers and many thanks.
we may just continue down to new orleans...
would love someone to convince us otherwise
hopefully this reaches you in time...charleston is a great city to spend a week. you can find everything you mentioned plus a lot more.
About 15 minutes from dowtown charleston is Folly Beach. Very laid back beach town with some nice restaraunts and bars. There are many other beaches in the area (Isle of Palms, Sullivans island, Kiawah, Seabrook) this is just a personal favorite. On the way to Folly Beach (just off Folly Rd.) there is a restaraunt called Bowen's Island. This place will no doubt satisfy you desire for a off the beaten path, crooked dock restaraunt. Downtown Charleston is full of great restaraunts, from hole in the walls to fine dining. Same goes for bars. If you are still interested I can send you the names of some places, just don't have the time at the moment. Have a good day...

just read that Bowen's Island Restaurant near Folly Beach burned down in 2006.... has is reopened??
sorry this took so long. bowen's island did burn down in 2006, but i am pretty sure it has reopened. also, the holiday inn on folly is reopening this week after a bunch of renovations. below is a list of bars and restaurants i recommend. also, the college of charleston is located downtown and is cool to walk around and check out some of the old buildings
Blind Tiger - very cool bar with a nice outdoor patio
Vendue Inn - rooftop bar, nice for happy hour, sunset
Market Pavilion - rooftop bar, good atmosphere
Taco Boy - Folly Beach bar
Hank's - Seafood
High Cotton - Steaks and Seafood
McCrady's - Steaks and Seafood
King Street Grill - Sports bar
Also, lots of good shopping on King St. and Market St.
There are so many good restaurants in Charleston it will be hard to go wrong
I haven't lived there for 4 years now so I'm sure things have changed, the links below are the "best of 2009" for Charleston and surrounding areas, as voted by locals...
check this link out for bars... http://www.charlestoncitypaper.com/gyrobase/page?oid=65124

This post comes a bit late, but maybe it'll help other people. Charleston also has lots of B&B's at varying price points and they are a great way to feel like you're really part of the City and to have a vacation with lots of character. While Charleston offers lots of upscale restaurants, some more casual favorites are the landmark Hominy Grill for Lowcountry favorites and Fleet Landing - a converted naval building right on the water which offers lots of fresh seafood and classic fried southern fare.
Mount Pleasant is just across the Arthur Ravenel Bridge from downtown (and is where you'll find the Patriot's Point naval museum). There you'll also find Shem Creek - a channel lined with several low-key restaurants with really fresh shrimp and fish as well as several bars.
