Travelling and working through Oz..for cash in hand!

Hi,

Hey Simon!

I have not done the trip yet but will be going in 4 months :D I have studied it so much I think I can answer few of your questions...

You are too old for a working visa the age limit is 30. So you would need to go on a holiday visa.

Fruit picking jobs vary on pay and how they pay. Basically they either pay per the hour or per the amount you pick. The only problem is they are ment to pay taxes for their employees so because you wont have a visa I dont think they would let you work for money unless they are a very easy going farmer! They prob get fined like in other countries if they employ people with no visas.

However I wouldnt be surprised if you were able to work for a place to stay??? This could cut your costs considerably.

Alot of the farms have accomadation so they might let you work for a place to stay. Email them and ask. Worth a try!

The hostels might let you do the same ask them.

Cheers
Rich

Thanks Rich, thats good to know. I will look in to it.

Make sure you have a good trip mate.

Simon.

Hi Simon,
My name's Pete & i'm an Aussie. It can be quite hard to find cash in hand work, and as the other reply stated, even fruit picking these days require work visas. Being 34, I understand makes it hard for working visas as well. Here's a tip, if you plan on buying a car & travelling around OZ(recommended), when you get here jump on ebay or scour the weekend garage sales & buy yourself a lawnmower & line trimmer!!!! I'm not joking, in the warmer areas(Sydney north to Cairns) the grass grows like nothing else!! A good second hand mower & trimmer should'nt cost much mor than a couple of hundred Oz dollars(less than 100 quid)
Then go push your mower around the streets and go doornock to see who wants their lawn mowed - i did this myself a couple of years ago on a trip around Oz & made good money. (usually got $30-35 an hour, cash - No boss, lots of old people who feed you & a top way to meet some really cool people!)
When you leave OZ, stick the mower back on ebay!!
Have fun mate!!
Cheers
Pete

Pete, you an absolute star mate!

I would be as happy as Larry doing something like that! Great idea and will seriously look into it.

Thanks again for your help, much appreciated.

All the best to you,

Simon.

If you go and see people selling strawberries around brisbane in June talk to them....they're good fun and they make heaps of money... you could make 100-300 a day. and they travel around to different cities from june-september.

message me I might have a phone number for you.

i'm in the same boat. just been in to STA, and the girl who's doing all our flights etc said it's probably not worth going for a working holiday visa, due to us only being in australia for 2.5 months. so to help us out financially, my friend and i are hoping to pick up some cash-in-hand work. we go to australia mid-june until the end of august, so we're aware that the winter months may not provide as many opportunities...

any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Not to be the the bad guy, but in Australia as the UK working, and not having the right to can get you in very big trouble. And for the sake of a 10,000 mile trip, I wouldn't risk getting locked up or deported with no right to return. When I was their, a friend of mine overstayed and got in to a lot of trouble. He was lucky he was leaving when they caught him.
