I'd spend a full day wandering around the city - perhaps do a walking tour. Spend your other day at Auschwitz - allow a full day for this as it takes a couple of hours to get there and there are guided tours and a short film. The salt mine is supposed to be good but I didn't have time for it.
Salt Mines? - You can't miss it! (it's not in exactly Cracow, but around 15 km beside). You can get there in the morning, and than in the afternoon, have a trip around the old Cracow. The next day - see Auschwitz (65 km away from Cracow), as recomended above.
The other interesting thing, that Cracow can offer you, are the alternative trips around specific areas of the city - called communism tours - where you can find many "jewels" of Eastern Block reality

Hi, my friend and I are looking at going Auschwitz for a couple of days in July. We were thinking the best place to stay would be in Krakow, but we have no knowledge of the city. Could you recommend any youth hostels? Also, how easy is it to get to Auschwitz from Krakow?

I'd recommend - it's fantastic and one of the best hostels I have ever stayed in. It's central (near the old square and train station) and the staff can help out with tours etc.
It's easy to get to Auschwitz - head to the main bus station. There are serveral buses a day for Auschwitz and you get dropped right outside the museum/tour centre. Buses back to the city leave from across the road from there. There is a also a train that goes there but I think the train station is a little way out of Auschwitz.
the zoo was amazing when i went, the bus from central krakow was only 2 zlotis and the zoo was 4. it was huge, definately the best part of my long weekend there.
Hello, I'm currently living in Cracow If you ask about some recommendations I would mention a great nightlife and awesome pubs in Cracow! Parties in the city are ones of the best in Europe. Auschwitz and Wieliczka are also worth seeing, Wawel Castle and whole Old Town and Kazimierz district.
If I was you I would choose some nice hostel near city centre to stay in, like Aston Hostel or example. There's a walking distance from city centre and it's close to all amenities and main bus routes. And it doesn't cost much after all. Staying there you are able to get to Old Town in 5 mins walking - that's a great convenience, because all the main pubs are placed in city centre and are opened till 5 am mainly

I would definitely recommend the salt mine. It blew me away! It's something unique you can't see elsewhere. And the best part is you can lick the walls and floor! Although, strangely, no one did.
It's easy to get too from the town center using the minivans they have running around.
True, the salt mine in stunning. It's hard to experience something like that in Europe. Worth seeing!
