I'm going to a remote island in Fiji this summer to do some archaeological work, and our brave leader has informed me that in the past, some of the local boys have crept into the camp while the crew was out working and walked off with the ladies' undergarments!
Wear men's underwear so maybe they won't want them!
I can't think of anything else except taking unappealing underwear with you. Maybe like those sports crop tops and plain cotton undwear - there are some good brands for these. I'm not sure what you have but Bonds make some that would still be comfortable but are fairly simple / plain.
I guess you could also take ratty, old stuff with you but that might not be a deterant!
When hiking a good way to dry clothes is to place them between the sleeping bag & the sleeping mat while you sleep & your body heat will dry them.
I'm not sure if you can find a way to apply this principle where you are staying (or even if the underwear would survive structurally if slept on) but perhaps it gives you the info to come up with a workable idea
Maybey try some Trip wire ?? or a Spike pit ??
Cheers Vice
Go with the men's underwear suggestion. They are comfy and usually cotton.
Fiji and underwear? I wouldn't bother with it. It's just 2 layers of clothes to sweat in instead of just 1 layer. Don't wear any.
I love this thread!
Surely you'll have a day off here and there? Do your laundry on the days when you're in. If you buy thin microfibre-like undies, they dry in a minute. A more imaginative approach: Do you have beds in the camp? You could put a little clothesline to hang in the springs underneath the bed!
Well, I thought I'd give an update on the undie quandry and what I ended up doing!
For about five dollars, I picked up a bicycle safety chain lock at a local hardware store. Something I could wrap around a small palm tree or branch if necessary.
I was on the island for about a month and a half and took eleven pairs of undies with me (found a sale at the mall and signed up for a customer undie club -- after ten pairs, I get another free! Woo hoo!). I figured the clothing I would be wearing in the field was going to be unfeminine enough, I want my undies to at least remind me that I have a girly side, despite the month's worth of MacGyver antics. (Ladies, when traveling to remote destinations, make sure even your duct tape is stylish, now available in teal and flamingo pink colors!).
I was able to do my girly laundry late at night in a bucket and hang my unmentionables inside on a line to dry. Long story, but the "room" I stayed in was actually a village "shop," complete with ukelele (functioning) and Christmas lights (nonfunctioning) hanging from the ceiling. The village women insisted on doing all of the laundry, but I did my own undies. Was able to hang onto all of my panties! A few of the other girls weren't as fortunate, however. Ha ha!
As for the fate of the bike chain, I gave it to the wife of the turaga ni koro (type of hereditary village chief). She and I became fast friends. She has a wonderful sense of humor, and I finally told her on the last day why I had a bike chain. She thought it was hilarious! It was one of a handful of gifts to her. She said (half jokingly) that she was going to use it on the front door. If her husband comes home a minute too late, he will find the door locked. With a bike chain.
Bike chains and panties make for a good travel story, but ask sometime about buying a motorcycle battery from a half-naked Malaysian man. This trip certainly had an unintentional undies theme.
