Hi
Fiji would be a much better choice.
why?
Safer place, friendlier happier people, more things to see/do, cheaper easier to get around in.
I have no idea what SamSalmon is talking about. Fiji had violent political uprising just a few years ago and is still unstable, and there is lots to see and do in Hawaii, which is probably the most beautiful state (weather wise) all year round--and hasn't had any violence since World War II.
You can get by with about $120 per day for a discount hotel, and then you'll need just a small amount for food--and either for a car or for renting a bike or taking the bus around the main island. If you want to go to the other islands, you'll have to get airline tickets or a boat--and I don't know what those tickets run now that some of the airlines are in such bad shape due to the credit crisis.
If you want to go to the larger resorts on the beach and or a "mega-resort" such as Grand Wailea on Maui, then you'll have to more than double the hotel charge--but it kind of depends upon what you want to see and do.
The main islands that tourists go to are:
Oahu--where the capital Honolulu is and where about 90% of the people live.
Maui
Kauai, and
Hawaii--also known as the big island, since the entire state (all of the islands combined) is also called Hawaii (confusing, I know).
Enjoy
Oh, I forgot to mention some of the main sights to see.
Oahu--Waikiki Beach, the blowhole, snorkeling at the beach just east of Honolulu (I forget the name), going to Sunset Beach to see the big surfing waves, visiting the Polynesian Cultural Center on the north part of the island, and visiting the pineapple plantation in the middle of the island.
Kauai--Fern Grotto, Coffee Plantation, Waimea Canyon (as deep as the Grand Canyon)
Big Island (Hawaii)--Coffee Plantations, Giant Volcano
Maui--Kanapali, Lahaina (old whaling village), Wailea beaches, road to Hana and the pools at the end.
Also, there are other islands, Molokai and Lanai--which not too many people go to--Kahoowanee (very, very small, and all one big mountain), and the other one, Niihau, is privately owned by a rich family that bought it years ago before it was illegal to do so.
Oh, and no matter which island(s) you go to, be sure to go to a luau.

Old old news-compare Hawaii's crime rates with Fiji's-no contest.
A person is better off visiting a country where almost everyone lives in small villages and produces their own food from their own fields and reefs.
Older people visiting Fiji often say that Fiji reminds them of Hawaii 50 years ago-if so it must have been quite a fine place in those halcyon days of yore.

There are some cheaper options still. Hostels for example. And camping is very common here as well.

Good point. I'm heading there and have been warned over and over again about all the high crime areas, especially Waikiki and Honolulu and other tourist-heavy areas. According to some acquaintances of mine, their car rental company suggest not leaving anything in your car as well as rolling down windows and unlocking the doors so that thieves are discouraged from damaging the car to get inside.
I recommend Hostels thier cheaper then Hotels Hands down
