I don't know why anyone said to not visit Bangkok on your own, over 15 million tourists visited Thailand last year and a very high percentage of them chose to visit Bangkok! For some of them Bangkok is the only place they visited for weeks at a time!
There are some tourists that only visit Thai beaches and ignore other scenic areas like Northern Thailand and the Chiang Mai area in particular. Avoiding Bangkok sometimes means tight connections for flights or long stays at airports waiting for your ride.
Full Moon parties do attract a lot of young travelers, probably more males than females, some only go there for the dope; you do have to coordinate your trip with a full moon. Here are some directions and dates for Koh Phangan.
Young travelers often choose the Khao San Road area for hotels. Other tourists to Bangkok may prefer a hotel where you can use the Skytrain rail service to get around the city. Sukhumvit Road area has hotels in all price ranges, good restaurants, malls, travel agencies for tours and flights and adult nightlife.
There are some good travel guides that you can use for info on various things to see. So visit your library or a book store. Wait until you get to Thailand to change any currency over to Thai baht for the best rate. From the airport there is excellent transportation to get you into the city if you arrive before midnight. After midnight a meter taxi is available.
You shouldn't have a problem meeting people. But there is plenty to do even if you are alone. For hotel advice mention a price range so suggestions you get matches your budget.
