Backpack for bad backs/necks

Might sound like a daft question, but is there any backpacks out there that go easy on people with neck and back problems?

Everyone's body is shaped a little differently. I wouldn't buy off the rack in your case - you need to be fitted by someone at a good sporting goods dealer such as - look for the adjustable torso kind, and smaller is better in my opinion!

I've got arthritis in my lower back and had surgery on my neck a few years ago. For me, a backpack is easier to deal with than a suitcase on wheels. I have to twist my body to pull it. I now travel with a backpack wherever I go. I agree on going to REI. They can help a lot with something that won't hurt.

Thats fantastic, thanks for your help! Good to get an insight form someone else who has similar problems. One thing thats stopped me traveling sooner is my neck, so if i can get a decent backpack that will minimise stress on it then its a huge bonus

Thanks x

Hello,

I was backpacking while recovering from a serious herniated spinal disk. Surprisingly, carrying a backpacking didn't affect it or I would say it even helped me.
To advices:
- travel very light (max 6-7kg)-> not because of your spine but of your muscles. And rest when necessary.
- use a backpack that supports your lower back, ie you will be in straight position instead of bending forward.

More important to make sure that when you are travelling on buses, you are in the right sitting position. Use a comfortable car-seat pillow or something to support your back. Also, try to avoid backseats of the bus as they tend to be more bumpy.

Have a nice journey and don't worry much about your back! It will just get better from travelling!
