Hi,
You can check out opodo.co.uk or expedia.co.uk or other search engines for flight comparison. You don't necessarily have to buy the ticket thru these websites: after you checked the price, you can go up to the actual airline company's website and buy it from there.
According to Opodo, you can find return tickets (birmingham - jackonsville) for GBP 560-600 inc all taxes and fares, which looks fairly reasonable. You will have to change flight two times.
You may find cheaper tickets from London to Miami or Fortlauderdale (in Florida), however if you add up all the costs of getting to London from your home and to Jacksonville from Miami/Fortlauderdale, you may end up paying the same amount of money, not to mention the extra time to travel.
Hope this helped.
Just so you know, you don't have to go all the way to Jacksonville to find a large container port on the East Coast.
The largest container shipment sites (in terms of value of products shipped) on the east coast are:
1. New York City/NewJersey (Jersey City/Hoboken)
2. Savannah, Georgia
3. Hampton Roads (Newport News/Hampton/Virginia Beach), Virginia (just a short ways south of Washington, DC)
4. Charleston, South Carolina
All of these are closer to Birmingham, UK than is Jacksonville, Florida
Lastly, I would think that the closest container port in the US that should be able to handle large container traffic would be either Boston, Massachusetts; Portsmouth, New Hampshire, or Portland, Maine.
Thanks for the feedback.
Considering all the logistics of getting to airports and associated costs, Birmingham does look the best to fly from. Thank you for the pointers.
With regards to shipping ports, Jacksonville is one of two (that I presently know of) that shipping companies run RoRo (roll on, roll off) ships from, which are specially designed for vehicle transportation. Plus its near a company who specialises in the type of vehicle I wish to import. Container shipping is not an option for the size vehicle I'm looking for However I will go and investigate your list of ports
