Has any US citizen been able to acquire a visa on arrival for Syria at the Jordanian border? With all of the recent political events, I've heard that it's been really difficult to obtain a visa on arrival, particularly for UK Nationals, and I can't imagine it to be any easier for US nationals. Has anyone had any success with this recently?
It might be difficult for you to get visa at the border, however not impossible. I am not sure about current situation but I met many US citizens travelling in Syria last year and some did manage to get visa at the border. I know that they like to make US citizens wait a half/full day at the border, claiming that they need to fax your request to embassy for check. Note: border closes late afternoon, so you might have to spend a night at the nearest border town in the country you're entering Syria from.
Syria: has a general policy that visa can be obtained only in your home country as long as they have a representation there. So, you will have harder time getting a visa in Istanbul than at the border. I got my visa at the border. They excepted my argument that I had been away from my country for a long time. They just checked the stamps (also for the israeli, like ten times..). But again, if you are coming far away from you home, normally you should have no problem. Visa is about US$40 (for EU citizens), valid for ten/fourteen days with single entry.

Thank you so much for your help! I decided not to go to Syria on this trip, given all of the news about recent violence, and difficulties for Americans traveling in this country.
