REALLY keen to go overseas on a gap year after school

Hey,

I think it's a great idea to take a break from study and see the world for a while. Travelling is an education in itself, particularly if you are going to learn another language while doing it (great idea!)

Choosing where to go is half the fun of travelling. Just researching all these destinations will no doubt make you want to see them all! But don't stress too much either. You're young and have plenty of time to travel the world. Have fun looking through your options and then just pick one. Maybe live with that decision for a few days and if you are having no second thoughts, then go for it and don't look back.

As for your back - I guess this is something to discuss with a doctor. I'd say though, if you are managing it well at home, there's no reason you can't manage it well overseas. Your main concern will be travel insurance because pre-existing conditions are generally not covered. So if you do need hospital care due to this, then you can't go to them to get reimbursed. If you think there is any decent chance of this, then I'd say research the medical system in the country you might want to go to. In the US you could be up for a small fortune if you needed to go to a hospital. In other countries, there are reciprocal agreements so you could probably be taken care of under the public health system.
