I'm heading up the East Coast of Australia in a couple of weeks, and I've done it before and loved it, so I'll be going back to my favourite places, but I also want to see a few new places that maybe aren't so well known. So has anyone been to any less visited places or smaller places on the East Coast which they would recommend for a stop-off for a couple of days?
I thought Eungella National Park was quite pretty; only visited it myself on a daytrip from Mackay (which is a town you can easily skip), but there might be some other base of operations there which would put you right in the park (camping is one option), in which case I'd recommend that.
When you have passed through the Byron Bay area, past the big banna, look for a sign off to the right. "Red Rock" really quite but stunning. no touristy things top beach.
Honestly, the mid central coast is a must see. One of my favorite surfing spots is - It's very secluded, quiet & is home to some the best waves going.
Theres also these fine places:
- Port Stephens - Check out Tea Gardens
- Yamba
- Port Macquire
I would thoroughly recomend Bargara near Bundaberg the beach is great and the Mon Repos turtle sanctuary is a must but make sure you pre book as the earliest bookers get first dibs as the turtles come ashore 10$ a ticket
I've also heard Yamba is one of the cool up-and-coming towns and a new "must-do" on the East Coast. Will definately be paying it a visit on my trip!
How are you travelling? I quite like the Nelson Bay Anna Bay area in NSW, but it'll be packed around easter time as will most places on the coast. Some places that might not be so busy and are quite nice in NSW are Guy Fawkes National Park and Border Ranges National Park, both are quite pretty and close enough to the coast to visit.
In Queensland I enjoyed Rainbow Beach which was a quiet little town near Fraser Island, further North I camped at Carmila Beach which was an awesome free camp ground right on the beach. I quite enjoyed Paluma and Eungella National Parks as well as well as Undara Lava tubes if you have time.
Hunter Valley in NSW was nice, if you're close Armidale is nice country town.
palaceboy1, that Mon Repos turtle sanctuary sounds good. Whereabouts is it near and is it easy to get to?
timtravels, I think I'm probably gonna be travelling on a Greyhound pass.
Thanks for all the tips everyone.
Would you be interested in buddying up and road tripping?? This is my ad in the 'travel companions' section.
