HELP FOR A 18 DAYS ROUTE TO CHINA

Hi,

China is a very big country. There are many place to visit. I think if you want visit whole china, 18 days is not enough. However, if you start from Beijing I can tell some places which I have visited like Tienanmen square, Great wall summer palace, Temple of Heaven, Lingshan mountain, Birds nest and many other places.

I´m a little bit lost.
I would also like to see the famous Yantse river, but I don´t want any cruise full of tourists...if you have any idea, I would be really thankfull.

I would definitely combine big cities with visiting rural areas as well. Many tourists/travellers complain after a week that all they have seen is just big crowded cities.

I would recommend two routes - if you choose your route well, they will give you a good mix of interesting cities, nature and culture.
Northern: Beijing + Great Wall, Shaanxi, Shanxi and even all the way to the far west of Gansu province.

Southern route:
Guanxi, Yunnan and Sichuan.

I know the above is not detailed but might be useful to start with digging more info on these provinces.
You may also be able insert Shanghai in your itinerary with an extra flight or sleeper/bullet train ride.

we've been in beijing for three days now and are having an amazing time. when you arrive, make sure to take an afternoon to hire a bike and ride around the hutons!

from here, we're heading south to shanghai and then to the huizhou villages in anhui province. i'm not sure how easy it actually is, but you should be able to do the three gorges after this, seeing the yangzi river and then heading to xian. that should be possible in 18 days, although you may be a little rushed.

One place that is off the beaten trail is Pingyao, It has it's old city intact and is now UNESCO protected. If you can get accommodation inside the old city then it is amazing experience. When my wife and I went (in 2004) and we stayed in a guest house that was built in the 16th century or so. A unique experience.

Pingyao is an overnight train from either Xian or Beijing

Pingyao I was also thinking, I have to think then a small change on the route,
because we would be two days on the night train, but I will see how to do it.

And the idea of the bikes to ride around the hutons I really like.

I am Chinese from Shanghai and I'd like to provide my advices here.
To be honest, Aug is not a good season for traveling in most cities in China including Beijing, Shanghai and Xian becasue it is too hot at that time.

18 days is not sufficent for thorough tour in those cities you listed, but if you just want to see some typical sight spot, it's possible.
From my personal point of view, you can start your journey from Beijing or Shanghai for convenient transportation, and then from north to south by no matter train or plain.
