Maybe a silly question, but do i really need one of these for Thailand and Oz?

for thailand: unless you are going in some heavy rainy season, it is totally useless. you can always buy an umbrella or simple poncho locally.
if you travel to oz - it really depends where you're going. in any case you can either take a thin rain jacket or buy something there. or use your umbrella/poncho that you bought in thailand..
Rain is God's way of telling you to find the closest bar.
