Hi All!
You can google euro rail passes and there a two major sites that sell them online, with free shipping to you. Based on how much traveling you will be doing, you may either want a pass or individual tickets. Say you are going to Paris and then Madrid and Italy, you can get a pass that is worth 10 or so train tickets and visit other places in those countries .. or if you want you could just buy 3 tickets. The more you travel .. the more worth it is to have a pass.
I do not know why it is cheaper to get it before you leave, but that is what I did. I think I had a student pass (>25) which included 10 or so vouchers to travel in 5 countries for $350. Though prices may have changed. Also, in certain cases, like reserved seating, or sleeper cabins, you may have to pay a small surplus on top of your existing pass. Also, you have to have it validated before your first travel date, in the country you are traveling from, but really this is quick and painless.
Cheaper than the train, may be busses, but do take into account they are not as comfortable, and a wee bit slower in Western Europe. Eastern Europe is a bit the opposite, where trains are slower and busses more efficient.
If you have no qualms about making it to the airport and all that craziness, there are some airlines that have extremely low fares. Wizz air is one of them, but you also have to check where they fly, as it may not be the easiest or most direct route to where you are going.
You can also hire a car, but I have no driven outside of any country that I hired a car in. I believe it to be possible, but I do not know if it is more or less expensive than the train. The train, in my opinion, is great for sleeping on and traveling.
Good Luck!
