Well it really depends on you! How much can you afford to spend in Phuket?
(Phuket is just about the most expensive place for tourists in all of Thailand!)
Usually you plan a budget out and know how much you can afford to spend and then ask for hotels that match your budget price. No one budget is the same for everyone who spends money in Thailand. Some travelers go for the cheapest places to stay, no matter if it is a really crappy place, and others only choose the best available.
Roughly for a hotel, during off season, from around 1000 baht to 8000 baht per night. Food depends on if you go to cheap places or are of the type that only goes to the expensive places.
You can really get screwed on transportation in Phuket compared to Pattaya and Bangkok.
Since you have a rough idea of how much it would cost in your country at an expensive area just use that amount as a guide until you figure out a budget.
If you are first flying into Bangkok are you seeing that city or just immediately flying out to Phuket? If you intend to skip Bangkok make sure you have enough time between connecting flights. If you have a long layover in Bangkok it may be better to see that city for a day or two and then fly to Phuket. Even in Chiang Mai and Bangkok you will find enough sunshine for a tan.
