I have a WHV, begging my travels in Sydeny June... Booked in Woodduck (anyone know what it's like?) for the first 4 nights.
Quite a few backpackers in syd do tend to stay on, and I've known a few people to meet people at backpackers and then look for places together. Most backpacker hostels will have bulletin boards.
Sydney gumtree has places, and jobs there.
