Ever considered New Zealand?? cause i'll be there for 6months alone, on my working holiday visa .
I'll be leaving Malaysia(where i'm from) to Christchurch on the 12th Aug (talk about coincidence!).
No plans yet, but was thinking of working in different parts of new zealand, and I cross the kiwi states. =)
Where are you coming from ? If you are stopping in Thailand first then Perth is a good starting point.
If you just want to see the coast line and major cities, it is a sensible route to start in Perth and then follow the coast anti-clockwise and see Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and then Cairns. Likewise you could do the reverse too if you wanted. This is a tried and true route for travellers and will cover the majority of places & the population, except for the centre of Australia (Ayres Rock/Uluru, The Kimberleys, etc). Central Australia is spectacular scenery and is what makes a trip to Australia different to other parts of the world so I would encourage you to consider going there - even if it is only a 4-5 day trip to Ayres Rock/Uluru as a taste.
Central Australia (aka The Red Centre) is best accessed by road from Adelaide or via plane from most of the capital cities.
Don't forget Australia is roughly the size of the entire USA but with only 10% of the population so if you are driving, most Aussies would spend 3+ months doing this sort of trip.

Wanted to be out by the 12th of August but a mate of ours could not go till september.
Flying to bangkok via bahrain for 2 weeks, do the full moon party.
Then flying from phuket to perth on the 18th i think
