Hi guys,
Doh! I'll be in Canada during that time period!
Still, I'll say "Amsterdam" for sure. Also Berlin. Personally I'm not that fond of London, and would rather replace it with Edinburgh, but maybe you could fit both in. I'd recommend keeping that (six cities) as an absolute maximum for three weeks, though, and I'd strongly recommend going for 4 or 5 cities despite my recommendations.
Your best bet for transport will probably be a string of cheapish flights, maybe with one or two trains in between. Don't really know how to best string them together, since I'd never hop around that much myself.
I'd say Berlin. Great city to visit, lots of history on the cold war and post WWII era. Also lots of interesting musea and sights.
As other city I could add Prague or Vienna, to incorporate a more 'eastern' component. Prague is the cheaper of the two (and crowded with many backpackers over the summer ).
Prague and Budapest!!!
Thanks for the replies, all!
This is the big difficulty in planning a European trip - just about everywhere is a must-see, but there's so little time and money! It looks like we're going to have to take my own advice in not rushing things through, leaving eastern and northern Europe for later trips unfortunately
Also I think we'll be pushing back the trip a little, to mid-Sept or thereabouts. Hopefully the weather would be cooler and also less crowded when it comes to tourist traffic?
And Berlin, yes... I think I'll have to squeeze that in in this trip. It seems to be the overwhelmingly popular city to visit for a first-timer to Europe!
Cheers,
Kelvin
ps. I'll pretend you're not trying to avoid me, Sander! I hope you've got great pictures and memories of Christchurch from your past visits to New Zealand... Things might look a little different the next time you come through this city again
Hey Kelvin
your better to go in september it would be cheaper and also not many tourist around! in Italy and some countries many places may close in august due to the heat and many business people would go on holidays so beware in August! London is lovely but maybe be better off going to Scotland more culture aspect and more greenery if you get me! Ireland would be a nice visit ha! I would recommend looking up inter-railing routes and this would help you to plan your trip as you should check it out!!
Enjoy the Trip!
Also I think we'll be pushing back the trip a little, to mid-Sept or thereabouts.
Awesome, I'll be back by then. So Amsterdam is a must for sure, otherwise I'll get to claim that you're avoiding me. :D
(Also, a generally better time of the year that, and particularly Rome should be much more pleasant in September.)

You should'nt forget Amsterdam or Eindhoven!
Germany and Scotland would be a good place too. Although I don't know if it would fit in your budget and schedule. But it's worth the try.
After much deliberation we've now got 24 days, landing first in London first week of September, followed by a flight to Berlin a few days later. The plan is completely open after that, as long as we are in Rome before 28th Sept for our flight back to Christchurch, New Zealand.
Paris is still a must and is likely to be straight after Berlin due to ease of railway access, and I'm thinking we're likely to have time for another city before Rome... Would Amsterdam be it? Or would time be better spent in Venice? Or should I visit another French or German city that might be more "on the way"?
Both my mate and I aren't keen to spend too much time on the road, rather we prefer to spend more time in a single place to thoroughly enjoy the city, so I think 5 cities would be the most we'll try for.
Accommodation wise, it seems that most are hovering at around €100/night for a twin-share room. I thought that's a bit steep!
