My wife and I will be travelling to USA for 4 to 5 weeks in either June or September next year. We are retired and are considering either hiring an RV and driving from the east coast to the west coast over a period of a month, or hiring a car and driving staying in hotel/motel accommodation. What I am looking for is a national hotel/motel chain similar to the travelodge.co.uk arrangement where rooms are availalbe for a very reasonable price provided they are pre booked. Does anyone know of such a chain that I can research to help with my trip planning?
There are travelodges all over the country!
Other large chains across the US are comfort inns, hampton inns, motel 6, ramada inn, super 8, holiday inn, la quinta, and on the more upscale side--Marriott, Hilton, Wyndham, Sheraton, Ritz Carlton, and Four Seasons.

What I am looking for is a chain similar to the travelodge (www.travelodge.co.uk) site on which they have a "supersaver" rate for as little as nineteen pounds per night if you book in advance and as a subscriber I am also often offered better than that - as little as nine pounds. (great tip for anyone travelling to UK or Spain to help save money, subscribe to their emails). for example last year carol and I spent 24 nights touring england and scotland and staying all Travelodge we paid less than five hundred dollars on accommodation because we took up a special nine pounds per night deal and planned around it. their normal rate is usually anywhere between sixty five and over one hundred pounds per night. We also used compass car hire from edinburgh to london for 17 days and with all insurances and relocation charges it only cost us $534 and it was a new car. so 24 days in UK cost us just over $1000 for all accomm and car hire.
Can anyone recommend any chains that do the same in the USA?
I guess they do it on the basis that they are filling otherwise projected vacant rooms and make their money on meals and drinks where they have restaurants.
I live in the Western USA and use the chain - part of the Choice Hotel group. Travelodge in the US is rather small and not of a very high standard, unlike the UK and AU Travelodges. is probably the largest chain motel, but of low standards.
Because of the size of this country, the motel picture will be a little different in each region. Prices here go way way up in areas of high demand such as the center of NYC, LA, SF or at popular beaches/national parks, but bargains can be had in the suburbs or rural areas. Today more and more motels are scattered along our Interstate Highway system - one of the most boring highway systems you'll ever find (they are great roads, but also great for falling asleep!)
If you're getting an RV, you will probably want to know about the campgrounds, because you will not be able to park that RV just anywhere. Here are a few links for RV sites in my area of as well as the website.
I know of no such supersaver rates as you describe - this can be a very expensive country for tourists. Personally, because I am a retired senior on Social Security, I can only afford foreign travel to the cheaper destinations (Vietnam, Turkey, Georgia, Thailand).

While the US can be expensive there are plenty of cheap motels and hotels where you can stay for anywhere from $20-70 a night depending on the time of year and you have a car to get into the cities and attraction areas.
I just did a trip from NYC to St. Augustine via car (and back) stopping in Cities like Savannah, Charleston, Annapolis, DC, and Virginia beach usually stayed for less than $50 a night (NYC area was $70 and Savannah was $110 but that was in the heart of Savannah).
We stayed in general at slightly nicer places and turned down plenty of places for under $35 either because they didn't have the best standards or were slightly further away than we wanted to be.
Rates are very seasonal though. Depending on how you plan you'll be able to take advantage of a lot of these types of places. All of the best deals we found were online, and most involved getting an AAA (Automobile Association of America) discount.
Finding a single chain would get you some perks, and would help you earn some free nights, but no one that I know of has the type of deal you found with travelodge.uk
September will be considerably cheaper to travel in the USA - If it were for myself, I would pick mid-Septermber through mid-October.
