Tonga is a "sun, sea and sand" destination. A typical tropical island. Not a lot to do there other than pass time.
There is a lot to see and do on both islands of NZ and it might be worth you spending your time seeing them in more detail. Many just go to the south of the South Island, which is like going to Orlando and saying you've seen America.
It's apparently quite hard to get around the Tongan Islands because boat schedules are not very regular. I would recommend either Samoa or the Cook Islands as breaks from NZ - I've been to both in the last 18 months and they are lovely. Both have more to do than Tonga and you should be able to get there reasonably cheaply with Pacific Blue. You are going in NZ school holidays though so prices might be higher and accommodation busier.
None of the Pacific Islands are particularly cheap; I've heard that Samoa is supposed to be the cheapest but I found it roughly on a par with NZ prices, and the Cook Islands are similar.

That's only true if you want to take an overnight ferry ride-flying from island to island is easy now that is flying.
The Vava'u archipelago is the place to be-all sorts of things to see/do it's not a lazy beach kind of place at all.
