Hi. This is another area that I definitely do not know much about just yet. I've seen on many resources that www.worldnomads.com is a good place to look at some possible options.
As with any insurance, its only any good when you need it! Trouble is, who knows when they will need it?
Your activity's might certainly bump up your chances of needing insurance, but it's like poker and even the fat guy sitting on the couch everyday can still draw a royal flush.
My advice is, checkout the company's you have found online by searching things like "XYZ company, bad rip off, claims" this will usually bring up forums where someone has a complaint. Then it's up to you to decide if the complaint is just someone whinging because they tried to rip off the insurance company to pay for a new camera and laptop they never owned in the first place, that they claimed they dropped in the canal on their trip to Venice, or if they are legitimate and consistent complaints.
Ive used Worldnomads a few times and found their rates reasonable, and their customer service prompt when I had questions. But the true test of insurance company's is when they have to pay out.
P.S Ive heard many stories of people that went without insurance and then something happened that put a very abrupt end to their travels. It's a big risk. Just add it to the expense of traveling, the same you would for accommodation, food and flights.

@Dodger: Great post! Nice to finally get feedback from someone who has experienced Worldnomads services. This is a big help - I appreciate it.
Also real quick - I was told by a few others that the most crucial to have at the LEAST insurance-wise is emergency evac and repatriation. Does that line up with your knowledge as well?

In your experiences, is travel insurance definitely important - or have you found it to be unnecessary and not worth it? If you've found it to be important, what do you feel the best option(s) are?
