Hey guys. So I've decided that I am definitely taking the Buy-As-You-Go flight approach as opposed to the RTW Ticket. Not super experienced in flying, so gonna need some help here.
I buy as I go, but the trick with this method is forward planing. The earlier you can buy your ticket the cheaper it is. Ive bought tickets to places that were so cheap I figured even if I didnt make the date, then I'd only be out $50 or so. A couple of years ago I flew from India to Malaysia for $50! I booked the ticket about 3 months before I flew. This year I have a flight from Malaysia to New Zealand that only cost $200. I look for deals like that all the time by checking directly with the airlines and signing up for their email alerts, and then plan a trip around those flights.
@Dodger: Right on! I also heard that being super flexible about when I need to fly and trying to hit the best fare days (i'm told that Tuesday is typically cheapest) works well for this style. Do you find these to be accurate as well?

Cheap or discounted flights are brilliant if they are to places you want to visit, but I don't see the point in just flying to a country because it's cheap to get there, what's that about.
You visit and stay in countries because they are places you are excited about seeing, places you have researched and planned to visit not just on a whim.
I think you will find that "buy-as-you-go" flights are quite expensive these days. The airline business has changed considerably world wide - today there are far fewer empty seats in the air, and those few seats can now be sold for BIG BUCKS! Even many LCC's today are priced well above the fares we paid just 2 years ago. You need to carry a big wallet these days.

I think you have missed a variation on how to travel. Its not a choice of, book an round the world ticket, or at a moments notice. I book in advance with tickets that are cheap enough that if I decide I want to stay on or change my route then I loose maybe 50 or 100 bucks, but still have the flexibility to go where I want when I want and not locked in on an around the world ticket. I buy far enough in advance that I can get a really cheap deal and of course it's places I want to go, not just because they are cheap. Sounds like you just didn't understand that.
