Hi

You might get more info over on the Lao board

I've researched transport between Hanoi and Vientiane in the past, I use google. Read travel blogs etc. Can't say I recall one person who enjoyed taking this 24 hour bus trip. Quite the opposite actually. However, I assume if you break the trip up you will get a great cultural experience but be prepared to rough it.

I made the decision that if, in the future, I need to do this trip it will be with Vietnam Airlines or Laos Airlines. I'm not unamendable to roughing it but I do draw the line.

Last year, I did the Vientiane to Hanoi trip, but I drop by Vinh, so I can say I've been there. Anyway, the bordering crossing was hell, but my bus fare was hell cheap, it was probably less than 25 US dollars, so I'm not really complaining. Besides, it was an interesting experience. Do it by land... I'd do it again.

Swept Away,

I read that road paving is an ongoing project. Can you give us your experience of the roads eg 60% paved. Also, what problems did you experience crossing the border?

Thanks for the replies

In the end we took the easy option and went with the flying option as we hadn't heard anything positive about the bus. We paid 157 dollars each meaning our bank account wasn't too happy but the journey was painless.

Thanks again

Leighton.

Hi

Hopefully you can help with some suggestions/information about getting from Hanoi to Laos cross land along with any tips or places you would recommend to stop off at other than Vientiane & luang prubang. I was hoping to try and break the journey up from Hanoi.

Any tips about the bus journey from Hanoi would also be good.

Cheers

Leighton

Hi,

From Hanoi, you can take an open bus to Vientiane from Nuoc Ngam Bus Station.
The fare is about 30 to 40 USD (I'm not sure if they rise the fare or not)
It take almost 1 day to travel from Hanoi to Vientiane. If you take a bus at 7:30 pm, you may come to Laos at 3 pm next day.

But I recommend you one thing.

Nuoc Ngam is not an international bus station, the staff there cannot speak English or any foreign language.
So it's better if you buy ticket from your hotel receptionist or ask the travel agency. It's a little expensive than you buy ticket by yourself, just a little. There are many travel companies in the Old Quarter provide ticket service for you such as South Pacific, Phoenix,...

May you have a good trip,

Anna
