I've only been away from home twice--once to visit my sister in NZ, and another time to visit Neal's family in Ireland. So, technically, I've never been completely away from family during the holidays.

I guess I got pangs of missing my family on Christmas Day itself. There's not much to do except make a phone call home, share what you're doing, wish everyone a Merry Christmas, and get back to whatever you were doing. I find it also helps a lot to just go with the flow of wherever you are. Follow the traditions of whoever's home you're visiting, sit back and enjoy. It definitely makes for very special Christmas memories!

I must say, though, that since having my own child--and watching as less and less of my grandparents' generation are around at Christmastime--I'm growing more and more nostalgic for the holidays of old. Going away for Christmas still means you can do the holidays at home the next year. But when people are missing and traditions change, there's no going back and re-living the Christmases of your childhood. Makes one appreciate Christmas that much more!
