You will not need any photos or baht for a visa when you arrive at Suvarnabhumi. Being a UK citizen you will get your free 30 day entry permit. It does state that you need a return ticket or proof of onward travel, adequate funds. The Thai Immigration officials can ask for them, but they usually don't. Don't stress over that. I would check with your airline. Some will not allow you to fly into Thailand on a one way ticket. Check.
You have several options IMO. Fly into BKK and accept the free 30 day entry permit. You can extend this: 7 days, 1,900 baht. That would not be my first choice. I suggest you buy a tourist visa before you leave the UK. Cheaper and solves the problem of staying over 30 days. Good luck.
When you do not have a tourist visa and do not have a return ticket your airline may balk at allowing you to board.
Why a one way ticket anyway? Since you know you will be there 30 days for sure plus a few more days why not settle on a definite return date and buy a round trip ticket?
Often when using major airlines 2 one way tickets are more expensive than a round trip ticket. Not on every single airline but on many of them flying overseas. Just do the math! The cost of transportation bringing you back to Bangkok is usually cheaper than the extra money you pay out buying 2 one way flights

I haven't got a one way ticket because I'm going from Thailand into Cambodia etc.
i too have a one way ticket in flying out of los angeles because i'm unsure of how long i'll be moving around out there. hopefully it's not an issue.

err lots!? No there is no golden number. Probably if you have a credit card, that will be suffice to relieve them of any worry of you not having funds for your trip, but really they never ask.
The problem is, that to me, it seems that the airlines have cottoned on to the idea that if they ask you for a onward ticket and you don't have one, they can refuse to let you on your flight until you purchase from them an onward ticket at the highest price that can charge. It's happened to me a couple of times now. you have no recourse with the airline as they are totally within their rights to deny you from getting on the plane. If you are flying with a one way ticket and you get caught out like this, the best solution is to buy a more expensive refundable ticket to the closest next country from your destination. So going into Thailand you can probably get a cheap ticket to Malaysia. Then as soon as you land in thailand, get on Skype and cancel that ticket. It usually costs you about $50 to do this.
Thailand immigration can ask for a lot of things, but they won't.
The airlines are the ones who occasionally ask for onward travel. Happened to me twice. I usually say cmon, cmon, cmon... never didn't get on the plane.
