So I am planning a 6 month trip through Europe and I think I have read just about everything about the schengen agreement. I know that as an Australian passport holder I don't need a visa but that I can only stay 90/180. My question is about whether these days are counted consecutively. I am Australian, currently living in England.
The 180 day period never "ends". It's a rolling window - inside any 180 day window (counted from any and every single day), you're only allowed to be in the Schengen zone for 90 days.
So, when you enter the Schengen Zone again in June/July, you'll be able to stay for a maximum of 86 days (or 84 days if the 4 days in Hungary were "full days", and didn't include the actual days on which you entered and left Hungary), and if you did that, you would then have to leave for 30 days before being allowed back in for 4 days, after which you would have to leave for a further 56 days before being allowed back in once more. Or you could break up your periods inside Schengen in any which way, and be allowed back earlier/longer, always keeping that rolling window in mind.
The 180 days ends 180 days after your first day in a Schengen country. Unfortunately, it doesn't reset every time you leave. I certainly wish it did. You need to get a visa to stay any longer than 90 days. If I'm wrong I'll be thrilled but I've been trying to find a way to stay longer and haven't found any loophole to slip through.
