MarcCollier has indicated that this thread is about Sydney

June is perfect. It's "winter" down south, but that basically means it gets a little bit chilly at night down in Melbourne (5-10 degrees at worst), while daytime temperatures are still good (20+ degrees generally), and that gets better the further north you go.
I generally tell people to budget AUD $75/day p.p. for accommodation/food/transport, which'd put your budget on the low side, particularly if you want to go out every so often. Australia's gotten rather expensive due to the exchange rate.

Personally I think companies like the oz experience are too much "tour bus", and prefer to rent a car or just bus from place to place by greyhound (or local alternatives). Still plenty of people to meet at hostels, but it's easier to detour, and you don't get any of the upselling of activities.

Hi,

Your time frame is good, albeit on the chilly side sometimes (especially if you prefer the heat!).

Doing things on your own is more fun (and cheaper!) than doing anything arranged. It is 2 of you going, so you don't need companions like other people who do tour companies partially for those reasons. Renting a car or a camper van is a cool (and often cheap) way to get from place to place. Flying in Oz can also be quite cheap, with a few cheap airlines to choose from. Personally, I think the Great Ocean Drive is a must, as are Melbourne and Sydney. Also the Great Barrier Reef (regretting I didn't do it!).

Each place is a different budget, with Melbourne and Sydney the most expensive I would say. You are easily looking at $40-50/night accommodation in a hostel (per person!) and any basic meal will cost you around $15-20 Australian dollars. Going out is also expensive so you have to be careful about that. It is quite expensive so be smart about your spending----try cooking more often than eating out!

Enjoy!
