What kind of experience did you have travelling the Pantanal in Brasil?
Much depends on when you're going. There's a lot of mosquitos during the wet season, and a moderate risk of malaria. Dengue fever is a real threat, however, as are several other mosquito-borne diseases. Turn to your GP or a travellers' clinique for information on inoculation.
That said, even though the east-west journey through the lower part of Brazil technically takes you through the Pantanal, it's not quite the most interesting part. Consider making an excursion from Campo Grande. The region is beautiful, lots and lots of birds and plant life, and some mammals if you're lucky.
Hi crazylegs
My friend and I last May/June did a similar enough trip but in reverse, we went from Ihla Grande (2 hours from Rio) to Iguassu Falls and then north to Campo Grande and from there booked a 3 or 4 day trip into the Pantanal (cant remember how long it was).... and from there our tour arranged for our transfer to Bonito as we wanted to do some snorkelling in the rivers (fabulous if you have time!) tehre are some caves and stuff there too but we only had enough time for a days snorkelling, its where the Rio Grande rises anyways from there we went to Corumba by bus crossed the border and got an overnight train to Santa Cruz, Bolivia.
Anyways, about the Pantanal, it was good, to be honest I thought we would see wildlife everywhere but we did see a good bit but nothing mad exciting like a puma! The stuff like piranha fishing and that was good fun too... I would recommend it, even to just get away - there are no phones and no internet so its a nice change!!
