Hello everybody, I'm about to travel to Mexico in December and I would like to stay for 3 months maybe 4. I was reading some canadian source on the web and I get a feeling there is civil war in Mexico and only thing what local can do is hate tourists, still from them, kidnap and other negative stuff as well.
I wonder if anybody has experience from there. I will be in Yucatan. Thank you all.
This is my first post on this forum. How is it possible for me to see what other posters have written? Anyway, in answer to your question, the Yucatan is safe. It's a very popular tourist destination and with a few precautions, you shouldn't have any problems. Don't drive at night. Night buses, however, are a safe means of travel. Carry all valuables on you, however, not in your check suitcases. There are pickpockets, so protect your money and don't open a wallet with a lot of money in it in public. In a restaurant or cafe, wrap your backpack or purse straps around your ankles or otherwise secure them. Mexico is a VERY large country, with many cultures and diverse lifestyles. As in any country, you can sense when you are in a risky part of a city. Mexicans are not violent toward tourists and the bizarre headlines that give Mexico a bad rap these days often involve the drug trade. I would advise not to use, buy or sell illegal drugs in Mexico unless you are VERY certain who you are dealing with. Enjoy ! You'll find the Mexicans fun and helpful.
Thank you I think I will have to go and see by myself. Drugs are not my problem so I don't need to worry about it.
Mexico is safe to travel but you'll just have to use your common sense and be more aware of your surroundings. It's better if you can travel with a friend or group. Don't wear anything flashy or expensive and stay out of dark areas. Had a friend travel in Mexico last year and he stuck to the coastllines for the most part. The bigger cities tend to have more of the drug problems. Happy and safe travels!
Most of the problems (drugs and all that) tend to be situated in the state of Sonora and Chihuahua--in the northern part of Mexico. I would probably try to avoid that area--or pass through quickly--on to the other areas.
I would expect that the Yucatan area is fairly low in violence--although they did have one very well-publicized problem late last year involving the killing of the new general in charge of pursuing the drug traffickers in the Cancun area.
I've done a fair bit of Mexico and of course there is crime there, the same as there is in NY, Toronto, London, Cairo and Sydney. I found it an OK place as far as safety was concerned.
The civil war you speak of.. There is always some sort of unrest in Mexico, somewhere. Their general conditions out there aren't the best by a long way and there's plenty of poverty, even over in Cancun. The cops are always having a purge and the locals occasionally fight back as best they can. It wasn't something that bothered us at all though. All we saw was quite a lot of poverty, but no aggravation. I really like the country and it's scenery is just wonderful.
There were parts of Tijuana and Mexico City that we were advised not to wander round after dark, so we avoided them. However, we have been warned about many little pockets around NY City as well. We went there, did as we were advised and had a great time.
Keep your eyes open, listen to the locals advice and you'll have a great time.

Well, the only way I really enjoyed Mexico was through a cruise. its not really that expensive but the trip was worth while. It was so awesome to visit Cabo and I loved what they offered the tourists there. There are tons of activities and there are tons of tourists in the area. be sure to buy a sombrero when you get there.

There's good and bad everywhere. All you need to do is be observant and wary.
Whether it's a country, a price being asked, a glass of water or a stranger approaching.. Just be aware and use your best judgement.
Sure I've made mistakes while travelling in the west and the east. So far I'm still travelling and enjoying it though.
