Yeah, San Francisco or Las Vegas--or possibly South Lake Tahoe--would be your best choices.
As you know, Christmas is a family time--so everyone will be spending it with their families--and most restaurants and shops will all be shut in all the small towns for this reason. All the Christmas festivals take place in early or mid-December (for example, La Jolla's festival and the Harbor Lights parades) so that people can be with their family when the holiday actually arrives.
If you want crowds, any mall will be packed on the three days prior to Christmas--but then that's probably the case in Australia as well as the US.
I guess I'd go to South Lake Tahoe and hope for some snow. There are casinos there (Harrah's, Harvey's and Caesars Palace), and a ski resort if they do have snow by then. And the casinos will be open most of the time, though probably on a very limited basis.
If you are already booked for Las Vegas--you could just go there ahead of time--and then have more time to visit Vegas or to take the time to go see the Grand Canyon or Sedona.

Unfortunately my family and I will be spending Xmas day in the car traveling from Montreal to Tampa Florida, seems my daughter has a college exam at 7pm Wednesday evening so we cant leave till early Thursday morning and arriving at my parents place Saturday afternoon,
If i were on the west coast looking for a place to spend Xmas the criteria would include a place with lots of restaurants,inexpensive motels,a good beach and if i wasn't married with children a lively club scene.
Anywhere in Eastern Europe. So much food and drink on the table and the celebrations don't stop until the last person is snoring round the fire.
Very little in their pockets, yet total happiness and hospitality.
Yosemite National Park is close to you. If a booking is available that would be my first choice.
Poke around this site for some ideas about where to spend Christmas..

BedouinLeo: I'm thinking Eastern Europe is a little far from America to spend Christmas Day however, I definitely intend on visiting in the near future! I was actually scheduled to visit that part of the world around this time last year but plans fell through as my dad had a few health issues to deal with.
Calcruzer: Would you happen to know the best way to get from San Francisco to South Lake Tahoe? Would I need to hire a car? I think that it would be nice to spend some time with nature for Christmas before I head to NY.

Ham Radio: Thanks for the suggestion. I intend to visit Yosemite however I'm just trying to decide the best place for it in my itinerary.
I dont know about you guys, but it just doesn't feel like Christmas without the snow! I got stuck in an airport in San Diego over Christmas and I didn't even recognize December. Looks like I'll be in Chicago this Xmas so it will definetely be cold!

You can get there either by bus or by car. You can also take the train to Reno--and then rent a car and drive the one hour or so it takes to get to Lake Tahoe from there.

Oh, and I should mention that if it looks like it might be kind of tough weather, you need to take Interstate-80 instead of US Highway 50 (and expect the road to be closed if it is actually snowing--in that case, head to San Francisco, or else plan for a delay in getting to Lake Tahoe).
