Rio de Janeiro during Carnival will be expensive, no way out. Just to give you an idea about what you will face: They have around 3 million foreign tourists a year in Rio. During Carnival the receive 800,000 of them in one week.
Check VilaCasanova, one of my favorite places.

Hi Mariano1a,
I was out in Rio for Carnival back in Feb. You'll have a great time out there. Like acrebrazil just said everything is going to be expensive out there. Prices for hostels will be going up. What we to save money was couchsurf. People offer a spare bed or room to stay at for free. All we did was take our hosts out for dinner one night to show our gratitude. Check them out there - http://www.couchsurfing.org/. good luck and safe travels!
forgot to mention this...if you do want to stay in a hostel i can suggest the Vila Carioca in Botafogo. It's a really nice hostel and fairly cheap. Check them out here- http://www.vilacarioca.com.br/. Another spot is One Love Hostel. It's next to Ipanema beach. Here's their site http://www.onelovehostels.com/. Hope this helps!
Thank you very much for the information!
I will surely check the sites out!
I loved Mellow Yellow hostel just off Copacabana beach. Pretty near the famous hotel and right on the underground stop too - not that I ever used it.
At Mellow Yellow I stayed in a room with no openable windows, just a few electric fans and at night it was really hot, and this was in July. That is my only gripe with Mellow Yellow though, it's a good hostel with a real good atmosphere.
