What to do around Santa Marta in Colombia

Hi

pmed you

Right. Well, Santa Marta has the beautiful Tayrona Park. Well worth the trip in it's own right.

Santa Marta is actually three towns in one. From Baranquilla, where you will no doubt come from, first there is Magdalena. Mag is almost completely a local tourist town. It is packed with inner country Colombians moving slowly around looking at shit. It is no fun, in my opinion, to go to the beach because it is so crowded...others may like this kind of thing, I guess. But the young should beware....It's a family tourist town, not a singles young hotty crowd.
Then there is Santa Marta. A commercial centre with it's own beach. The water is still blue (which you'll be starved for if you were looking for it in Cartagena. The hotels there are cheaper...but seedier.

And finally, there is Taganga...Now this is a Caribbean beach town....Love it. Scuba diving and laid back young expats hanging around and being cool. The greatest sandwich shop on the Colombian coast and many many many hills to climb....Just not that many hotels. The place started as a fishing community. THey seem to be quite bemused by the arrival of the young cool scubadiving sandwich seeking expats.

Great place is Colombia's Santa Marta and environs.

D
