Although I am no expert on overland travelling in Africa, I would say that doing that route in a month wouldn't be possible.
The distance and theoretical connections are not the problem: it's more the fact of visas (especially the Libyan one), existence of reliable transport and some very dangerous areas if you avoid Libya (Sudan/Tchad).
Probably best route would be Libya-Tunisia-Algeria-Mali-Guinee-Sierra Leone.
That way avoiding Sudan/Tchad, avoiding risky transport from Libya to Niger, and avoiding the route Ivory Coast/Liberia.

According to what I know that route isn't very safe either. The border area between Algeria-Mali has seen some trouble, tourists were kidnapped and held for ransom. The terror organisation Al-Qaida in the Magreb has published videos on the web, they are specifically warning Western Tourists, their target area includes the city Timbuktu.
If you are still determined look at travelling Morocco-Maretania-Mali-Guinee, flying Cairo-London-Morocco or Cairo-Germany-Morocco. Tunisia is safe to travel in, but with Lybian visa being a pain in the neck and Algeria posing a big risk Morocco would be the better starting point to get to sub-saharan West Africa.
BTW, any reason you want to go to Freetown? I think it might be safer if you headed for Ghana or Conakry, Guinee instead.

I'm actually looking into a 3 month volunteer placement in Freetown area.
My goal was to see a bit of Africa on the way to the placement, and then to work my way up the coast to Morocco where I can fly to Paris and catch my flight back to Canada at the end. I never like doubling back the same way I've already travelled :P
From what I know (which isn't much) it is better and safer to go down south from Morocco than to seek transport up north.

you are right about the algeria-mali route. thanks.
I heard Conakry though has been quite unsafe during the last couple of months and westerners are even being followed from the airport to hotel or other places.
Might be better know again, but from September things have been getting worse.
