You should visit Venice and the Cinque Terre south of Genoa is a wonderful area.
The 5 villages on the cliffs, like no where else in Italy. Vernazza the best place to stay, but you can hike all 5 villages or use the train to get there and back and just explore
Sorrento and Positano/Amalfi Coast absolutely wonderful area to explore
We travelled Italy for 8 weeks in July/August/September 2009 and these were the highlights of our trip

Around Venice we have a good places.
The first is Riviera del Brenta with Palladian Villas on Brenta River....
We have Chioggia, a Venice in miniature...
Pellestrina venetian cycling Island....
and more...Paduan hills with baths and Garda Lake (desenzano, sirmione and more...)
but you can go to bassano del Grappa or around Treviso ...with wine roads.....
you must only select your destinations.
all this areas is very good for riding by bike,......
and if you are lucky, you will check a local accomodation with cheap prices....

Really? Talking about food and attraction, Italy was my number 1 choice especially Venice. Don't forget the Gondolla ride and also visit Florence where the famous attractions there were as follows: Boboli Garden and Pitti Palace and Campinile - Bell Tower.
Whilst in Venice take one of the ferries out to the islands, Burrano is beautiful and well worth the 1 hour trip.You will find it hard to drag yourself away from Venice it's amazing!
I prefare Lake Como to Lake Garda, but either way stop in Verona for a couple of hours it's about half way, and is really lovely. If you decide to head back east to the coast, Le Marche around Ravenna is very nice.
Train travel in Italy is painless and far cheaper than the UK, but if you are driving the motorway system is very good, and far less crowded than here.
