We will be taking a train from Switzerland to Rome on December 26th. We plan on leaving Rome and traveling by train to Florence early on December 30th. We will leave Florence and travel to Venice on January 1. On January 4 we plan to travel back to Switzerland to catch our plane. Our questions are: What should we see during this time? Are there any stops in beteween we should make? Should we spend more time in one place than another? Thanks!!
I've never been to Florence or Venice between Xmas and NY, but judging from the other Italian cities I have visited during that period, I'd say you won't find much going on at all. All Italians are away to celebrate Christmas with their families, leaving the cities to tourists.
On december 31st and maybe also december 26th, I very much doubt whether anything will be open at all. This leaves you with 3 days to visit Rome, half a day to visit sights in Florence, and 3 days to visit Venice. I'd change your itinerary so as to allow for more time in Florence. Venice is nice, really, but winter isn't exactly the most interesting period, and your time is better spent in Florence. With a schedule like this, wanting to add other places would be utter madness.
