I am trying to find the lowest cost way to go from NCE (Nice, France) to YVR (Vancouver, Canada).
I'm not understanding how that price comes by, and it's also weird to see an itinerary of New York-London and Nice-Vancouver, without a London-Nice journey?
Anyway, while people have bought flights and didn't complete all the journeys on the itinerary, usually it's for later parts of the journey. As far as I know, missing the initial flights will usually cancel the ticket despite there being remainder flights to take. So you could buy the cheaper return ticket and not use the return part, but if you buy this multi-trip with hope to take only the last flight on the itinerary, I'm afraid that's not going to work.
Some companies give refunds for unused return portion of a 2-way ticket. Is this possible with the flights you're looking at?
Is there a problem if I book the muti-city flight, and then just fly the NCE->YVR portion that I really need?
Yes. If you book New York-London-Nice-Vancouver and do not take the first flight (New York-London in your case) all other flights will be cancelled too.
The easiest solution to your problem would probably be to fly to Dublin or London with a budget airline and then catch an Air Lingus flight to Canada. AFAIK Air Lingus has the only decent one-way flight options across the Atlantic.
Try searching with opodo.co.uk for one-way flights from London, Paris or Dublin to YVR and with skyscanner.net for flights from Nice to London or Dublin.
Looking at a random date this November I find one-way flights for Dublin to Vancouver with AA and Air Lingus for around 500 GBP which is roughly 900 CAD. The budget flight to Dublin should cost something like 50-150 CAD, so you are still under the 1k limit.
I also think that you should look for flights to Seattle too, not just to Vancouver.
