Hi Guys,
There is no "the" pass where this company goes; they have lots of different passes for different routes, depending on number of travel days and distance covered. Likewise, giving any estimate for how much it'd cost to "travel both islands" is impossible - you could spend five days on each island and see just a select few highlights, or take months really going everywhere.
Generally speaking, in New Zealand you can expect to be able to travel independently (with regular public transport (intercity/newmans busses, or regional equivalents)) for 10-50% cheaper than with a tour company like the kiwi experience, depending on if you get with the public transport companies, and/or can get (super) saver fares (these give up to 50% discount; it's mostly a matter of booking a lot in advance, but sometimes they're still available even a few days before). For two people, it might also be cost effective to rent a car (even with March still being high/shoulder season), especially if you want to be on the move most days, rather than taking things more slowly and lingering in places.
If you know the exact route you'd be travelling, you could price that out with intercity busses. Or if time is the limiting factor and you're flexible with the route, you could look up the cost for a car rental during that number of days. Given the amount of information we have so far, we can't really do either for you.
I have absolutely no idea about the cost of independent transport in Fiji. I'm assuming it's comparable; e.g. a bit cheaper than with a tour company.
I think you should consider buying a car when you get here. You will find it easy to get one through your backpackers or the trademe website. Public transport is expensive, slow and not very flexible. If you get a van you can sleep in it. I think Kiwi experience is really fun and cool if you're 18-25 and love to party and hook up and have a lot of extra money for the tourist activities it stops at. Just driving around with your brother and camping or staying in hostels will cost about NZ$70-90 a day if you're on the move spending petrol. I think you can get a car that works for about NZ$600. Also, buying a car is really straightforward because the warrent of fitness and registration/licensing transfer to the new owners without and extra costs.
