I have not rented for longer than a few days, but have. Worth reading IMO.
When you say bike you do mean a motorcycle - right?
If you have never driven in Asia before you are in for a treat!
Do some research on how to drive legally in VN. Driving illegally and involved in an accident could be a bit of a problem. I have been to VN but I won't drive there. I do use bicycles when I can though in the countryside.

Buying. You might want to do some research on buying too. Some information says it is illegal for you to buy a bike. Like this: "Firstly, it is illegal for a foreigner to own a motorbike in Vietnam. However, it can be registered in a Vietnamese persons name."
Then you have to sell this bike some way. There are some expat forums for Vietnam you can consult from long term Vietnam visitors. They will have some real time advice.
Good luck and investigate insurance requirements in case you need emergency medical care too.
yes I meant motorbike wasn't too clear there was I.
I know I will be driving illegally but that is a risk I am willing to take.
