Hi all, I am a first time traveller planning to set off early 2014. I live in the UK and plan to see London then leave from there. Could anyone who has done this before give me their suggestions on the best routes to take without flying/travelling back and forth wasting money on transport. Is there a route thats best starting and ending in the UK. Also are there any good android apps for this kind of thing? Any advice would be a big help. Thanks

Depending on your politics there could be 48 countries included in Europe. What are your interests? Where do you want to go?
What date is 'early 2014'?
Over what period?
What will you have as a daily budget to include travel, accommodation, eating, drinking (if you do), entrance fees, whatever your personal needs.
What accommodation suits you?
If the money really matters are you happy to take a 10 hour bus ride (for example) rather than a much shorter flight or train journey?
It is really a matter of spreading out a map of Europe and deciding what you want to see and where you want to go and then connecting the countries up for easiest travelling route, so maybe a clockwise circle. Though if you leave early enough, starting from southern Europe where it is warmer will be better.
You will need to give us some idea of your budget since travelling and accommodation are not cheap. Also how long away.
There are a number of cheap airlines and what might be better is flying from one airport to another, and then staying in a centre and using that as a hub for days out to places you want to visit, then onto the next destination.
Come June, prices will start going up. Come July, rooms and transport will start filling up, and prices will go up even more, and worse in August. Southern destinations are more expensive so if you do much of southern Europe first, then you can do northern Europe in July and August when prices aren't so bad as down south.
Sorry, I am new to this and forgot the important info. I plan to leave the UK in February and money is not an issue although I am traveling alone fir the first time so would like to maybe stay in hostels to meet new people. I will plan the accommodation and daily budget stuff later but just wondered if anyone had done a similar thing and what route did they take. I dont really mind how I get from place to place but if a suggested route links using train or bus routes then I would rather do that over flying, flying just seems too easy. Even that route, long as it is, misses heaps of goodies: the Alps, Belgrade, Barcelona, Moscow. Some have particular challenges, like Russia needs a visa planning in advance with set arrival date. Then there's the whole seasons thing, the question of how long you've got, and trying not to double back on yourself too much.
If you're in the uk the good news is that you can use cheap flights anytime to mop up some bits you weren't able to fit into the big trip.

As the previous posters said, it will be hard to suggest you a route if you don't tell us which countries you think you would like to visit! Maybe there are some places in Europe that seem more appealing to you than others. Could you be a little more specific about what you would like to see and do during this trip? I am assuming this is the first time you are travelling and you are probably not very informed about the potential destinations. But you surely know if you prefer to be in big cities or close to the nature, if you would like to travel for 1 month or 1 year, if there are any particular landmarks in Europe that you've always dreamed to see with your own eyes, etc etc. Having that information would help us to help you
Today, you can travel almost everywhere in Europe by bus or train, so there's no need to restrain yourself from choosing a route that would cover all the places you can be interested in. If you really have no clue about what those places can be, the only thing that occurs to me is that you start by googling european countries so you can find images and information about them to see what could possibly suit you! The choices are so many!!!!!
======Europe without flying======
Here is a way : take the train to Portsmouth, HANTS and then the fast ferry to FRANCE (probably Cherbourg.) You can then continue your trip by rail to almost anywhere in Europe like Southern France, Spain ant Italy for some warmer weather or The Alpine ragion for some snow.

As a first time traveler with no finance issue, I recommend a cruise. River cruises look good but are more pricier than an 'Ocean' cruise.
To my mind, this has a few advantages for you.
Your trip is planned for you.
You can choose the length of trip.
You can choose an itinerary that suits.
You will see enough of a place to decide if it is worth returning, or not.
Trips start from ports all around the UK or Europe or worldwide.
Meet all sorts of interesting people.
Socialise on board, or not.
Try local food ashore or not - the food on board will be great.
CLEAN , FLUSH TOILETS - Pure heaven
You don't have to contend with hotels and the travel between them.
The ship is your hotel - YOU ONLY UNPACK ONCE.
Remember that you cannot & will not see everything a place has to offer & you can always go back another time.
Take care - cruising can become addictive
A draw-back is you do not have time ashore to make much contact with the locals except the tour guides.
