Sao Paulo is quite dangerous. I avoided it when I was in nearby Rio.
Montevideo (Uruguay) is only a short distance from Buenos Aires.
I took an early plane from Rio and arrived at Buenos Aires airport about 8am. Compare prices before you decide on a very long bus trip. No matter how comfortable the seats are, just several hours in one and you will have had enough (It's 1,673 miles).
Do keep an eye on your luggage at all bus stops, and at all times if anyone can get at it.

I only wanted a stop in Sao Paulo because otherwise the bustrips are very long - any tips for stops between Rio and Foz do Iguacu plus Foz do Iguacu and Salta?
I have about 17 days for the trip from Rio to Salta so any tips for stops are welcome
