So here's a thing, my friends and I want to go on a 14 days trip to new zealand. Unfortunately the only time we all are free is during july. Which I know its winter in NZ.
So here's my rough plan and I would love if any New Zealanders have any suggestion on the cheapest way to go to these places, mind you we are only students. We're gonna land in auckland and decide to drive there. What is the best thing I can do there and how long should i spent there?
1) North Island Bay
- Cape Reinga
What other things can we do and what's the ideal time needed to be spent here?
2) Rotorua
3)taupo
4) Wellington
Maybe I'm missing a detail here - does the car relocation thing mean driving back to Auckland? Even one way it sounds a lot of driving for a 14 day trip.
In 14 days I'd stick to one island. Then go back to do it properly another time. :-)
If you don't mind spending some time behind the wheel, you can easily drive both islands in two weeks. I have done it in less.
Obviously the further south you go, the colder it will be that time of year as you head in the direction of the South Pole.
If you pick up a car at one end of NZ and drop it off at the other end, you are in for some very steep one way charges as they have to pay someone to drive it back. But you are driving back to Auckland?
If you go to the other island in NZ, you drop your car off at one side, go across on the ferry as a foot passenger, and pick up another car from the same company without being charged extra for it on the other side.
You are in low season, and even in January and February I have had no trouble finding B&B or Guest House accommodation. Just make some vague plans and then decide exactly what you are going to do, day by day, when there.
Do buy a good road map, and consider buying a Lonely Planet guide to NZ. Also be careful of radar traps, using a phone while driving, and such. The NZ police are quite hot when it comes to fines.
Well there's gonna be about 5 drivers. Yes we are going to back north by driving back the car.
