What size bag/case should i take for 6 weeks USA? Baring in mind our travel will be coach and car and we will we staying in a mixture of hotels and hostels. I have a 60l hold all but it seems quite tight.
For many experienced travellers 40 litres is maximum for hotel/hostel backpacking travel. And that's travelling through 3 climates for an indefinite period of time.
You don't mention any details about what you're doing in the US, where you're visiting or most importantly when you're travelling but 60 litres is more than enough for most backpackers. If your backpack is going to spend most of its time in a bus/car and a hotel/hostel and you're not getting off the beaten path then it can be as big as you wish.

I personally take a 4 wheel suitcase but that's me.
You should take the same amount of clothes etc for 6 week as you would take for 12 months there is no difference you would just wash on route.
If you cannot comfortable lift the rucksack above your head it is too heavy.

Personally, I travel with a ~40L cabin-sized case with a zippered extension regardless of trip duration. If I have a little extra in the case, I just use the extension and check it in. I think 60L sounds like more than enough, unless of course 'we' means two of you in the same case!
As Terry points out, if your case is travelling by coach/car it will not be as much of a strain and the sky is really the limit in terms of luggage size. If you do have any budget airline connections, however, do keep in mind the ticket type you bought i.e. carry-on only saver fares.
Thanks everyone. Yes my case will be in hotels/hostels/car/bus for most of the time and I won't really be carrying it round for any length of time. I think I'll stick with the 60l just to be safe. There is wash facilities at certain accommodations so I guess I won't need to take AS much.
