I successfully applied for a Canadian Working Holiday visa in 2012, and I suppose not much has changed since then.

The cheapest way to get from Toronto to Vancouver is probably flying. It's also the fastest by far. A train would be expensive and take days, and so would taking a bus. You're basically flying the entire country so there isn't actually a way to do it cheap!

1) Can you wait until after you have submitted your application and been granted a provisional place before you get police certificates and all other documentation together? Or do you have to have all that paperwork submitted to IEC before the rounds open?
2) How long after the application date before you received your confirmed letter of invitation to enter Canada? Did you get your visa in the first or second round?
3) Did you experience any technical difficulties during the submission process? I read that the quota of visas disappears within 30 mins and a lot of people missed out because the system was freezing etc.
I appreciate any advice or tips you might have on the process as a whole. THanks so much!
@curiouscanadian Thanks for your help. I have heard it's a LLLLLLong journey trans-Canada by train but that's part of the appeal. I love train travel and have always wanted to take this trip. I thought maybe that the fares I was finding online were tourist packages and hoped a native might be able to point me in the direction of a more realistic fare.

My memory is a little hazy on some of the details here, but I'll do my best :D I'm from the UK and I see you're from Ireland, so I imagine the procedures are quite similar for both our great countries.
I think your application must be conditionally accepted before they ask for the forms, police certificates, letters of reference etc. Luckily, I had no computer problems at all. I believe the visas for UK citizens were all released in one go at the beginning of January 2012 and I certainly received my conditional acceptance on Jan 30th, so I'd say it takes around a month from application to acceptance. They'll require payment by online transfer and forms, certificates, letters of reference etc by post quite quickly after this. I received my full acceptance on Feb 22nd, I think.
With regards to any tips or advice, I forgot to keep a copy of the Police Certificate when I sent the original to the High Commission. I soon learnt that it was one of a long list of things that Immigration just MIGHT need to see when you enter the country. As it was, I printed plenty of stuff only to be asked for just my full acceptance letter.

That's great Andrew, thanks! Am I right then in saying there's not much you have to do before applying for the visa on the opening date? Most of the paperwork, etc. comes after that?

It was wonderful, thanks. I lived and worked with some fantastic people. I worked in a restaurant and it was sometimes tough physically, but a great job overall. I didn't party as much as most other people, as I was saving up to travel a little in the US on the way home, plus I'm not a big drinker anymore, anyway.
I balked at the idea of spending a whole year away from home, so I only worked the winter season and only had just over two weeks of travelling in the US. I'm intending to return to Canada in 2015 and stay away from home for a full year this time.
Sounds like you have the bug so! thanks again for the help with the visa thing. I might pick your brain once or twice more closer to the time I'm applying if you are still here on TP.

I never did a WHV for Canada (applied for one (but the Dutch process is different, so not much use to you), but then circumstances changed, and I never used it). I did however spend two months in the country later, six weeks of which were on the west coast. When you get to the point where you actually want detailed recommendations, hit me up for advice on the best hikes in Banff, and places on Vancouver Island which you totally should not miss.
Thanks Sander. Vancouver Island is exactly where I'm headed, if all goes to plan So, I'd love to hear any suggestions for sure! I've been to Banff before and did a lot of hiking with my brother there at the time, so I'm not sure if I'll be going back or not. If I am, I'll let you know
To be honest, I'm trying to not get too 'involved" in the whole idea until I find out whether or not I have the visa.There's fierce competition for them here in Ireland, so I will be lucky to get one. Fingers crossed!
