AUS - Ease of finding work

Hi Guys!

Hey! I did a program called ultimate oz and they gave me a free membership to a site called travellers at work and they have a bunch of jobs that are for backpackers and they help you find a job it was really easy. like i said i got the membership included so i dont know how much it is but it may be worth looking into i found a job in like a week and the job wasnt bad at all and pretty good pay.
Good luck!

Thanks for your reply! I've looked into the Ultimate Oz packages and although they seem really handy, I'm reluctant to spend too much money after arriving. I imagine I'll still be in a similar position in four months time when I'm ready to leave. I'm mainly anxious about finding work, I don't mind doing everything else on my own, but finding work quickly is hugely important to me. I'll keep an eye out for Ulimate Oz though and maybe send some emails out!

You might like to check out http://jobsearch.gov.au/harvesttrail/ to find out what's in season.

Thanks Kellie! Do you have an idea of how readily first time fruit pickers get taken on by farmers?

They only take on first time fruit pickers, because no one ever wants to do it a second time!

Haha true! Though I think I have heard of regular (professional?) locals that travel the trail.
You'll not be fighting for jobs with them though, AWFletcher.

Thanks for the insight guys! I'm just looking for something to keep me going while I move around the country, picking fruit seemed ideal for that reason, just keen to make sure it's not too difficult to get into upon arrival in the country

I've never done fruit picking, but Ive met many that have. So with that in mind here is what I've been told. Australia is tough because of the distances and heat. There are some unscrupulous farmers out there that will take advantage of you. Some have "camps" set up that offer accommodations and food. These are usually over priced because you have no choice and you end up working very hard with a good rate of pay but then spend it all on accommodations and food.

If you have a job skill, you might do better to get a short term job in that field. You'll make more money in a shorter time and then be able to go travel.

Or go to NZ. I heard from many people that although you make less money in NZ, it's much cheaper to live and so you still end up with more and in my opinion in a more friendly country. You can get the same WHV for NZ that you can for Aus.

I arrived in Brisbane at the start of Feb, I found it very hard to find work - it's not as easy as people from Europe make it out to be that is "You get a job as soon as you step off your flight".. I found that if your looking to work in Cafe's etc Barista experience is a MUST, for Labouring work you need to have experience unless you know someone, and you need PPE, and your White Card (Safe Pass) As for Sales and Call centres, most places require previous and proven records of sales targets. I found that most of my applications where frowned upon as I didn't have any Australian references.

PS: Fruit picking is tough to find too!

... Hope this helped!
