USA, Fiji, Australia, Thailand .. money and weather

Hi!

As I would arrive in June, I would be arriving in the middle of winter (is this correct?). As a sun chaser, I would like to be somewhere as hot as possible - is there anywhere I could be in Australia throughout the winter that would still provide decent sunshine (and therefore decent tan!).

Australia's "winter" is for the most part similar to your late spring. In Sydney, you can expect sunny days with daytime temperatures around 20 degrees. Going further north, it just gets better and better until you reach the tropical parts. Indeed the perfect time of the year for everywhere Brisbane and further north. About the only places you'd be somewhat chilly would be around Melbourne (and there only at night) and in Tasmania.

And am I correct in thinking I need £3,200 to enter the country with a working visa?

AUD $5000 is the minimum requirement to be eligible for a WHV; at the current exchange rate, that works out to about £2,750. More is definitely better, though; money goes swiftly in Australia. That amount would barely last for two months for most backpackers.

Would hopping over to NZ to go on the Kiwi bus be a huge expense too?

As with any tour bus, the kiwi experience is far from the cheapest way to travel through New Zealand. (Public transport works out quite a bit cheaper, and brings you mostly to the same places, with a lot more flexibility on route. Since there's two of you, renting a car can also work out cheaper, and would be by far my recommended way to get around.) Still not a "huge" expensive, though, and very much recommended. Make it a month minimum in New Zealand, preferably two. Same awesome infrastructure as Australia, but way more densely packed with worthwhile sights, and some 10-20% cheaper, day-to-day.

In terms of places to stay, I am happy with guest houses and hostels (though perhaps private rooms - just a personal preference).

Where I said above that AUD $5000 would last about two month - that was for dorm rooms. Make it 6-7 weeks when staying in private rooms (and that only because you're sharing the cost with someone else).

Thank you
