Links that open in new window

I'm new to the site - before I get too deep into posts, is there a way to arrange links so that they open in a new window rather than send the reader offsite immediately?

No, there isn't.

We strongly believe that the visitor should be in control of what his browser does, not the person who creates the link.

Visitors who _want_ to have new windows, or new tabs, have easy controls in their browser to make this happen on their own. (ctrl-click, scroll-wheel-click, or right-click: "open in new X"). However, usability research has shown time and again that visitors who don't understand these concepts have their entire mental model severely thrown out of whack by new windows/tabs opening automatically, and that this functionality is thus extremely confusing / undesirable for them. Conversely, the "back" button is the one browser functionality which is understood universally, and so someone who follows a link away from the site, and then wants to return, can successfully do so with the back button (but that would appear to be "broken" if they're in a new window).
